The training curriculum which has been developed and provided to you was created by Boston University and funded through a grant provided to Louisiana by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare (CMS). In 2003, Louisiana was awarded a grant entitled Community-Integrated Personal Supports and Services (CPASS). It was with these grant funds that a curriculum was developed for personal care attendants and their provider agencies which would help them better serve individuals with mental illness.

The curriculum was developed into two separate parts. A knowledge component was created which can help educate individuals on concepts related to mental illness. This component will be provided on-line. Upon the successful completion of this component, the PCA and their provider agency will be able to access the skills component of the curriculum. The skills component of the curriculum is more interactive in nature and is comprised of a trainer coming into your facility to train staff on communication and problem-solving techniques. The skills component of the curriculum can be accessed by contacting the Mental Health Association of Greater Baton Rouge at (225) 929-7674.

Licensed Direct Care Service Providers may utilize the skills component of the training to count towards annual in-service training required by licensing standards.
