Personal Assistant Services (PAS) have the potential to become an effective method of serving people with Serious and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI). Due to the national push for individuals to reside in their home and community environments while receiving the least restrictive type of care, PAS can fill a gap in the service delivery continuum by providing a much needed home based service. It would allow for individuals to live in their own home and community environments with assistance being provided to them as needed, to overcome obstacles which could, without the appropriate supports, lead to hospitalization.
